Just a few hours before Johannes Geis officially moved to Schalke 04, Mainz 05 found his replacement. The carnival club has confirmed the signing of Fabian Frei on a four-year deal.
Frei played for the most successful Swiss club, FC Basel for ten years as a midfielder and won five titles with them. He is believed to have cost the German club a close to €10m (£7.1m) for his deal.
The 26-year-old is an experienced Swiss Super League player, having a total of 235 appearances, 29 goals, and 42 assist. He was also featured in 23 Champions League matches and 24 Europa League fixture.
Coach Martin Schmidt was pleased with the recent development in his team, "Fabian Frei is a player who can not only improve our game, but every other player, with his technical and strategic qualities."
This was supported by General Manager Christian Heidel as quoted by the club's offical website.
"Fabian Frei soon caught our eye as our preferred player for a position in the centre of our midfield if we were to make any changes," he said.
"We're getting a gifted player, both defensively and attacking, who is strong and very experienced with strategic qualities and a very good vision of the game."
