After being relegated from La Liga three years ago, Sporting Gijon will make a comeback in the Spanish top flight next season after securing an inevitable promotion.
Gijon just obtained a 3-0 victory against the second division champions Real Betis. The additional three points were enough to send them in the second place of the standing ousting Girona who conceded a goal in injury time to draw 1-1 at home over Lugo.
Girona's Francisco Sandaza gave them the lead before halftime, but an equalizing goal from Pablo Caballero in the 91st minute snatched them the win. With more than enough time to steal the game, one of Girona's attempts was ruled out for offside causing a commotion in the stadium. A linesman was hit by a thrown object which lead to a short suspension of the game. However, at the end of the match the home team still got defeated.
On the other side, Sporting dominated their match against Betis. They snared three goals from Miguel Angel Guerrero, Jony Rodriguez and Isma Lopez.
Gijon and Girona are tied with 42 points each, but with the goal difference taken into consideration, the latter will have to take their chances in the La Liga relegation play-off while the former will have the automatic promotion.
