Russia gets ban lifted, to play Olympic basketball qualifiers

Russia's ban lifted for Olympic basketball qualifiers
Two weeks after receiving a suspension, Russia got their ban partially lifted by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

The Russian received a letter of suspension from FIBA after a long series of internal legal battles and control issues within the body. This led to a decision disallowing all of the nation's basketball team from competing in any FIBA-led competitions.

However, in a recent statement, the world organization says that the federation's national teams will be allowed to partake in the Olympic qualifiers, but will still remain suspended.

Dmitriy Rogovitskiy of Retuers:

Governing body FIBA has lifted the ban on Russia, allowing the country to compete in next month’s European championship and other international tournaments, Russian Basketball Federation (RFB) said on Sunday.

"Russian national teams will be able to take part in all FIBA’s tournaments, however sanctions in relation to members of the RFB will still remain in place," the Russian Deputy Sports Minister Pavel Kolobkov told the R-Sport agency.

Now, as a result, the Russian men's team will have the chance to defend their Olympic bronze medals in 2012, if not nab the elusive title. But, first they have to get a top-two finish at Eurobasket in September or through the Olympic Qualifying Tournament. With the likes of Timofey Mozgov, Alexey Shved and Sergey Karasev, without a doubt, Russia will be a formidable force.
