Last season was my worst career - Negredo

Alvaro Negredo claims that his last season was the ‘worst of his career’ after scoring a goal that proved crucial to Valencia’s Champions League.

Negredo netted in Monaco as Valencia were beaten 2-1 in their second leg play-off with the Ligue 1 side, winning 4-3 on aggregate.

“I’ve scored a few like that. I remember one precisely at Valencia that was like that,” he said.

“There were other good options but I chose that one because usually the goalkeeper has less time to react.

“Strikers live on goals. Last season I wasn’t so lucky. I was trying by working hard and doing other things, but it is necessary. We all have to contribute.

“I was lucky enough to score but we have to highlight the work done by my teammates at home and in Monaco, and also last season, where everything was put in place. We deserve to be where we are.”
It was put to Negredo that we’re seeing a new player, a happier player, and he replied that he’s never stopped being happy or working hard.

“I never left. Last year wasn’t the best for games or goals. It was the worst season of my career as a professional,” he revealed.

“I worked all summer to be the best and make things difficult for the Coach. I started at Vallecas and also in Monaco and looked for a reward.

“I’ve always been happy. There are moments of a slump, perhaps, but since I arrived I’ve been happy. I have my people and that’s enough.

“But it is better if you’re working hard and being rewarded.

“I’m very self-critical and know when I do things right and when I don’t. It’s true the fans have never stopped supporting me and giving me signs of affection. It’s also true we need to reward them.

“The summer started badly. There was a lot of self-criticism. I went on holiday with my family and came back ready.

“I can’t blame anyone for what happened. I can play a lot but this issue is I have to do well. And I wasn’t.

“Paco Alcacer is a very important player for us. Today it’s my turn but there are always signs of affection.

“I happen to be the veteran but I learn from the young players, who have an overwhelming desire.”
