The Detroit Red Wings have announced the signing of veteran defenceman Mike Green from the Washington Capitals. According to The Detroit News, Green agreed to an $18 million, three-year contract.
The 29-year-old Canadian was drafted by the Capitals in 2004 where he played for ten seasons. It was reported that his limited playing minutes, which just averaged over 19 minutes last season was the reason behind his move. He has a record of 360 points in his 575 career games.
"We want to thank Mike for 10 great seasons with the Washington Capitals," the Capitals stated following the announcement.
"Mike was an ultimate professional in his long tenure with our organization and had a huge impact on our community. We wish Mike all the best with the Detroit Red Wings organization."
The 35-year-old veteran center Brad Richards was also acquired by Red Wings. He signed a one-year deal worth $3 million that could amount up to $4 million if playoff bonuses are to be included.
Richards played 76 games for the Chicago Blackhawks last summer, having scored 37 points with a career-low average of 14:53 of ice time per game.
The 2015 champions didn't renew Richards contract, despite scoring 14 points in their Stanley Cup campaign.
