It seems like the overflowing publicity for the cute little yellow henchmen exceeded expectations. The prequel of Despicable Me, the Minions have had a terrific opening weekend garnering the first place and easily trampling Jurassic World to the second spot.
The story about the origin of the goofy, sometimes frustratingly annoying (for their masters) Minions, has definitely caught the attention of a lot of moviegoers. The film debuted to $115.2 million domestically, beating out the Toy Story 3 and grabbing the 2nd highest opening weekend for an animated movie ever. It was just a little bit short from Shrek the Third's $121 million, which occupies the top spot.
On Friday alone, Minions garnered a whooping $46.2 million, making it the largest opening in animated film history, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The motion picture premiered in America just over the weekend, but globally the movie has already been released for two weeks now.
