Featherweights Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares are set to fight each other in a highly-anticipated bout that will headline Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN card on Aug. 29 (10 p.m. ET) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Both boxers have shown a tremendous display of intensity in most of their fights which have won them world titles in multiple divisions. Santa Cruz has two, the IBF World Bantamweight Championship and the WBC Super Bantamweight Championship. On the other hand, Abner Mares' victories handed him the IBF Bantamweight, IBO Bantamweight, and the WBO NABO Bantamweight titles.
They may have accumulated a number of belts under their names, but fans were left unsatisfied with their recent soft opponents.
After a huge demand from fans, the two Mexicans finally decided to face each other this August.
"I'm really excited for this fight," said 29-year-old Mares. "It's a fight the fans have been asking for, and I'm ready to give them what they want: a great show and a great victory."
In May, Santa Cruz easily defeated Jose Cayetano via 10-round unanimous decision as an undercard on the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight.
"This fight means so much to me because I know it is what the fans have been waiting for," Santa Cruz said. "The opportunity to fight at Staples Center against a Mexican warrior and great fighter in Abner Mares is one that I plan on taking very seriously.
"We have been preparing for this moment for a very long time, and I'm so glad it's finally here," Santa Cruz added. "A win is going to take one of us to the next level."
"We're honored to bring this highly anticipated showdown between Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares to the great Southern California boxing fans," said Tom Brown of TGB Promotions. "Leo and Abner have risen to the top of the sport and this much talked about battle at the Staples Center is a fight not to be missed."
