Former FIFA Vice President Chung Mong-joon announced that he will run for president of the world football organization and will make it official in his visit to Europe in August.
Chung, who lost his job as vice president in 2011 believes that FIFA became more corrupt after he vacated his post.
''It won't be an easy, but I think it would be worth it, and there could be good results if I try hard enough,'' Chung said to a group of reporters before flying out of Seoul.
''I plan to officially announce my candidacy in mid-August, and if possible, in Europe, the center of world soccer.''
A billionaire scion of the Hyundai empire, Chung also ran for president of Korea and mayor of Seoul, although unsuccessfully. In his potential bid for presidency, he promises a near-complete overhaul of the organization and total transparency of all financial information.
FIFA has been the center of controversies since May, after U.S. law enforcement indicted 14 top football officials and executives in Zurich regarding alleged racketeering, bribery and money laundering issues.
In lieu of this matter, newly re-elected FIFA President Sepp Blatter called for a special election and have it scheduled on February next year. Blatter refused to step down and would want to wait until his successor is elected.
