One
more English Premier League legend has left England to join Major
Soccer League in the United States. Chelsea veteran Didier Drogba is
confirmed to have signed with Montreal Impact based in Canada.
"It's
an honour to welcome Didier Drogba to the Impact," president
Joey Saputo told the club's official website. "From the first
conversation I had with him, I felt that he really wanted to play in
Montreal. This is one of the biggest days in club history and his
arrival to the club will be beneficial in every aspect."
To
get the services of Drogba, Montreal Impact had to cut a deal with
Chicago Fire who was the first to negotiate with Ivorian star. The
Canadian side sent Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) and general
allocation money to Fire so the latter will drop their claim on
Drogba.
Didie
Drogba, now 37, has a decorated career with Chelsea where he stayed
for eight years (2004-2012) before returning last season. While with
Blues, he won four EPL trophies, one Champions League, three Football
League Cup, and more. He is the team's fourth all-time scorer and has
the most number of goals scored by a non English player. Drogba also
has the most number of goals scored by an African in Champions League
with 44. Internationally, he is Ivory Coast's all time stop scorer
with 65.
Drogba
joins other European legends who extended their careers in MLS. Among
them are Steven Gerrard, Kaka, Frank Lampard, Andrea Pirlo, and David
Villa.
