Recent matches in Universiade Gwangju 2015 saw defending champions Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk and Lee Yong Dae/ Ko Sung Hyun crashed out of the competition.
Lee/Ko who were expected to successfully defend their title in Men's Doubles were defeated by Zhang Wen and Wang Yilv of China in the quarter-finals. The Koreans easily gained the lead through their first game victory, but were stunned by the Chinese in the following sets 12-21 21-12 21-17.
Defending Men's Singles titlist, Saensomboonsuk also fell from the top as he was trampled by Jeon Hyeok Jin, 21-18 21-19.
Meanwhile, Lee/Ko’s compatriots Kim Gi Jung/Kim Sa Rang are still vying for gold with their triumph against the Russians, Nikita Khakimov/Vasily Kuznetsov, 21-14 21-9.
In the next round, Jeon Hyeok Jin will face Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen, while Son Wan Ho, who cruised past Thailand’s Suppanyu Avihingsanon 21-14 21-16, will face another Chinese Taipei player, Hsu Jen Hao. Hsu just conquered China’s Gao Huan, 21-14 21-14.
