Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan announced that the team re-signed center Evgeny Kuznetsov to a two-year deal worth $6 million.
The 23-year-old Russian was picked by the Capitals in the first round, 26th overall in the 2010 NHL Draft. In his league debut, he recorded three goals and six assists in the 17 games he played for the team in 2013-14 season.
In July 1, Kuznetsov became a restricted free agent after scoring 37 points and 11 goals in 80 games he had with the Verizon Center side in 2014-15, his first full season in the NHL. In the recent Stanley Cup Playoffs, he had seven points in five goals. He even scored the game-winning goal against the New York Islanders in the Game 7 of the Eastern Conference First Round.
The Capitals also acquired the services of forward Justin Williams with a two-year contract worth $6.5 million and T.J. Oshie in a trade with the St. Louis Blues. MacLellan believes that the arrival of Williams will benefit Kuznetsov and give the team a huge boost.
"I think he'll have a big effect on Kuznetsov and [Andre] Burakovsky, and I also think he'll have a good effect on Ovi and [Nicklas] Backstrom," MacLellan said. "It's good to have a guy that has won Cups and been through the wars as he has. He's won three Cups, so I think he'll have a big influence on our forward group."
