Canada's beach volleyball campaign at the 2015 Pan American Games was off to a great start as they got their first win against Cayman Islands.
Melissa Humana-Paredes and Taylor Pischke had a great opening game, trampling Ileann Powery and Chante Smith-Johnson on a 2-0 (21-8 and 21-10) victory.
Tournament format features 16 teams and will run until July 21 for the medal ceremony.
The Canadians ranked 17th on the FIVB World Tour and are making their Pan Am debut in front of their home crowd.
"I had tons of people here, I had messages all week of people telling me they are coming to our games," Humana-Paredes exclaimed after the match.
"I’m not too sure who exactly is here but there is so many people out there," Humana-Paredes added. "I actually got a message from my Grade 3 teacher that I haven’t seen in years, saying that she was going to come, so this is all super exciting."
The duo who had a busy summer on tour in Europe had an aggressive start defeating their opponents in barely 40 minutes.
"It is amazing, we have had a really good season so far overseas, but we haven’t been home in three months it feels like," said Humana-Paredes. "Being back here is really nice for us and really comforting to be able to play in front of all these people is really special."
The crowd was truly supportive and it will go in their favor as they chase their dream of nabbing the gold medals. Canada will be facing Puerto Rico in their second game.
