AS Roma faces Lazio in the 2012 - 13 Coppa Italia Final

It's a good old fashioned grudge match in
the 2012 - 13 Coppa Italia Final as AS Roma and Lazio revisit their long
- standing rivalry in the Derby della Capitale, only this time, the
Italy Cup will be on the line as the two Italian sides from the capital
city of Rome collide at the Stadio Olimpico on May 26.
With the current Italian Serie A season pretty much
over and football pundits expecting Juventus to win their second
straight title in the top flight of Italian football, the only thing
left for the rest of the clubs to do at this point is have a strong
finish to their year and hope it will land them a spot in the
prestigious UEFA Champions League competition in their next campaign.
The
only problem is, even that is no longer a possibility for both sides.
AS Roma, listed by BetVictory at 2.38 and SBOBET at 2.34 to beat Lazio,
head into the Italy Cup final still a couple of places away from the
league's top three spots, which means they still have a lot to do if
they are planning to compete for the European Cup. However, with only a
few days left before the Serie A campaign comes to a close, they can
very well kiss their Champions League aspirations good bye, making their
tiff with their rivals Lazio on May 26 that much bigger as the Rome
Derby takes the Stadio Olimpico for the third time.
Winning the 2012 - 13 Coppa Italia Final is the only
goal AS Roma will and should be concerned with at this point. After all,
the Yellow - Reds are one of the two winningnest football clubs in the
history of the tournament, tied with the Italian Serie A champions
Juventus with nine Italian Cups. AS Roma can become the most successful
side of the tournament if they can beat Lazio when they resume their
rivalry in the Derby della Capitale on May 26 as both teams go on a
collision course in this year's Italy Cup final.
The only problem is, AS Roma have yet to beat their
rivals in this campaign. Lazio, listed by Bet365 and Ladbrokes at 2.88
to beat Roma in this year's Coppa Italia Final, have remained spotless
when it comes to their little inter - city rivalry in the Rome Derby.
That's right, in their last two meetings of the current Italian Serie A
season, Roma can't seem to get the advantage over the White and Sky
Blues as Lazio beat the Yellow - Reds, 3 - 2, before holding them to a 1
- 1 draw in their very last encounter.
And unfortunately for AS Roma, those two games do not
even show just how dominant Lazio have been in the Derby della Capitale
because in case you didn't know, the White and Sky Blues' 3 - 2 win over
the Yellow Reds back in their first meeting of the Italian Serie A was
their third successive victory over their rivals in these big grudge
matches. For what it's worth, AS Roma did look like they were going to
finally break their losing streak to their rivals after earning an early
1 - 0 lead in their first match - up of the current Serie A campaign,
thanks to Roma midfielder Erik Lamela coming up with the first score of
the contest, nine minutes from the opening kickoff.
The
White and Sky Blues though, were not willing to cooperate as Lazio
midfielder Antonio Candreva managed to give his side the equaliser with a
goal in the 35th minute to tie the game. That will be followed up by
another goal, this time from Lazio's star forward Miroslav Klose, to put
the Biancocelesti ahead before midfielder Stefano Mauri would put the
club in front for good with a goal as soon as they took the pitch after
the halftime break, scoring in the 46th minute of the second half.
Miralem Pjanic would come up with a consolation goal in the 86th minute
for AS Roma but the fact remains, the Yellow - Reds still can't figure
out a way to beat Lazio and their second meeting of the Serie A season
won't be any different.
Determined to finally end their losing streak to
Lazio, AS Roma were pumped up after winning four of their last six
matches heading to their return match with their rivals but for some
reason, they just couldn't get the job done. All the Yellow - Reds could
do was to tie the contest after the White and Sky Blues started the
game with a goal from Hernanes in the 16th minute, thanks to Roma
forward Francesco Totti converting a penalty to tie the match - up. They
could've ended up trailing their rivals in the second half but
fortunately for them, Hernanes missed out on converting his penalty kick
that would've given the White and Sky Blues the lead and another
victory. Lady luck must be smiling on Roma even for just a little bit.
On May 26, AS Roma can't afford to lose to Lazio
again. With the Italy Cup and the opportunity to be the football club to
have the most wins in the Coppa Italia tournament at stake, I'm hoping
the Yellow - Reds will have the testicular fortitude to finally overcome
their inter - city adversaries.
