Lorenzo leads Marquez

Jorge Lorenzo opened the MotoGP weekend at Brno on top by edging Marc Marquez to the top spot.

The fastest two riders in Indianapolis, Lorenzo and Marquez were again the class of the field as the Majorcan got to within four tenths of a second of the official lap record.

Fast from the off, Lorenzo steadily eased his way into the session, that saw the Ducati pairing of Andrea Iannone and Dovizioso place competitively inside the top five.

The top three of Iannone, Marquez and Lorenzo lapped within a tenth of one another until the Movistar Yamaha man lowered his early time by half a second midway through his second run.

Lorenzo's final time of 1m 56.499s was only troubled by Marquez mid-way through the session as he posted a best time 0.15s slower at the beginning of his nine-lap final run. The reigning world champion had dusted himself down after a low speed fall at turn 13, where he ran off track and eventually laid his Honda down in the gravel.

Such was the heat greeting riders on track, Dani Pedrosa exited with hard rear rubber on his final run, which he then used to climb from seventh to third, three tenths off the fastest time.

Behind came the Ducatis as Dovizioso – a tenth off Pedrosa – finished ahead of Iannone as the latter debuted the updated GP15, which features an upgraded engine and narrower frame. Fourth in the championship, Iannone did however use the old model at the beginning and end the session, when he set his fastest time.

After exchanging places with Bradley Smith as the chequered flag was readied, Valentino had a not-altogether-surprising subdued morning, when he finished over half a second off his team-mate in sixth.

Aleix Espargaro fitted a soft option rear tyre to cement a place in the top ten. The Catalan finished eighth, a place ahead of team-mate Maverick Viñales. Cal Crutchlow rounded out the top ten.
