The winner of the Miguel Cotto vs. Saul "Canelo" Alvarez bout must fight Gennady "GGG" Golovkin, said World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman.
Sulaiman announced that whoever prevails in the much-awaited match between the WBC middleweight title holder, Cotto, and the former super welterweight champion, Canelo, should face the WBC middleweight title challenger, Golovkin.
If on the occasion the winner won't be able to fight Golovkin, the 33-year-old Kazakh will ultimately and immediately received the WBC middleweight belt.
"The winner of Cotto vs. Alvarez has to fight Gennady Golovkin as that is the WBC ruling. If that doesn't happen then Golovkin moves from interim to undisputed champion," Sulaiman informed World Boxing News.
The International Boxing Organization and World Boxing Association middleweight champion remains unbeaten with 33 wins, 30 of which via knockout, earning him a remarkable 91 percent KO rate. He was announced as the WBC interim middleweight champion when he destroyed Marco Antonio Rubio, via a 2nd round KO during their clash in October.
Golovkin's agreement is still needed to proceed with the future as stated by Sulaiman.
"The WBC is doing everything we can to have this fight done. It requires Gennady Golovkin's acceptance, but the ruling and everything seems possible that the fight will materialize," Sulaiman said.
"I believe that (November) is the case and it is just a natural fight and a great fight between two rivals that can enhance boxing. We have been addressing this for a couple of months and it seems that we are very close to a final agreement, so I am very positive."
