Disney announced the Star Wars spin-off movie about the young Han Solo. It will be released on Memorial Day weekend in 2018, and will be directed by Chris Miller and Phil Lord, who were also behind the computer-animated adventure comedy film Lego Movie.
"This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us," the duo said in a statement.
"This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all."
Lord and Miller have gained great reputation since the successes of their well-received films, the 21 Jump Street and its sequel, 22 Jump Street, and the popular The Lego Movie.
The upcoming movie will focus on how Han Solo became a smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi encountered at the Mos Eisley cantina.
Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and his son Jon Kasdan will be responsible for the spin-off's screenplay.
