Germany international Marcell Jansen retires at 29

Unlike many of his age who are negotiating their ways on the biggest offers available, Germany international Marcell Jansen walked away from the sport at 29.

The 29-year-old came to fame since his lone successful season with Bayern Munich where he won a Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal title. He is also a constant name in Germany's line-up since representing the country in the U21 team in 2004. He has a total of 45 caps and three goals for the senior team.

Jansen came up with the decision when he was released by Hamburg, where he played for seven years at the end of the last season. Despite being physically healthy, he decided against playing for other clubs.

"I thought about it on holiday. There were a lot of good offers," the defender told Bild.

"I am fit, can move on a free transfer, could still earn good wages but I'd rather go without the money. I can't just suddenly start kissing another badge," he added, explaining how "emotionally tied" he has become to Hamburg.

"I don't want to lie or deceive some other club or fans when I am no longer fully behind it."

Jansen also informed the newspaper of his future plans now that he won't be playing football anymore.

"I'm glad that I'm getting my hobby back. Football used to be my job, now it's my hobby once more."

Germany coach Joachim Low commended Jansen, saying, "I respect his decision to end his career already, although he would certainly be able to continue playing. Marcell was for many years part of the national team, he stood for dynamism, commitment and passion."
