Former boxers Hearns, McKart praise ‘Southpaw’

Local boxing luminaries praise ‘Southpaw’ for realism
Southpaw, a compelling film that revolves around a boxer's life has earned praises from former boxing champion Thomas Hearns and recently retired boxer Bronco McKart who were present at the Detroit premiere of the movie.

If compared to the Academy Award winning Rocky, both fighters agreed that the Antoine Fuqua-helmed movie is better.

Hearns said that he could identify with the storyline. He was once a world champion who also fell hard during the final stages of his career. He's heard stories like that of 'Billy Hope' whose manager has gone bad and made him lose millions.

"It is more realistic," Hearns said. "I mean I am not knocking Rocky. Southpaw is more realistic as to what is happening in boxing. I know the things that happened in the movie can happen. I know they happened when I was boxing."

However, Rocky has already hold its ground as an American classic which can never be replaced.

The film has fight scenes which seem to be more believable alongside its dig into the financial ruins that some boxers go through.

"To me, the movie was spot on," said McKart, who is best known for his fights with Winky Wright. "That is one of the more realistic movies I’ve ever seen from the standpoint of the part 50 Cent plays (the promoter).

"But that is your typical boxing. When you are on top, everybody is riding with you. But when you hit bottom, people step on you."

The cast which includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams, Forest Whitaker and 50 Cent, with Eminem executive producing the soundtrack will put the moviegoers through a roller coaster of emotions.

It deals not just with the boxer's attempt for redemption, but also his fight into getting his daughter back. Southpaw, as Hearns believes it to be is a masterpiece.

"I have been there, and I will say this movie is very good," Hearns said. "I have nothing bad to say about Rocky, (but) this one was better."
