Adrian Liu and Derrick Ng lose major sponsors, might miss Olympic Games

Canadian Adrian Liu and Derrick Ng might miss the Olympics Games after failing to compete in the Pan Am Games due to a clerical error.

As reported a major sponsor of these Canada's top badminton players has pulled out because the Vancouver duo missed gaining important ranking points needed to qualify for the Olympics.

In an interview Ng said that they can't afford the $40,000 bill in order to compete in nearly 18 other tournaments to make up for the qualifying points they've lost. Thus, they've started an online funding campaign.

"It was pretty devastating to hear our sponsor was pulling our funding," said Ng. "It was another big blow for us."

Badminton Canada mistakenly entered the pair into another tournament, which overlapped the Pan Am Games thereby violating the Badminton World Federation regulation and got them disqualified. The organization president Anil Kaul is looking to find ways to help the Ng and Liu.

"Some sort of financial support is what they require at the moment," said Kaul in a phone interview from Winnipeg.

"What form and how we do that is still up in the air. They're not looking for handshakes and stuff, they're looking to get to events and try to qualify for the Olympics."

At the time of writing Ng and Liu's GoFundMe campaign has raised $6,200. This is still far from the needed $40,000 which will cover both of their cost of living, flights, food, accommodations, entry fees, transportation, and everything else that they need in the competitions.
