Kroos, James and Marcelo lead Ancelotti tributes

The coach was sacked by Real Madrid on Monday, with a host of players thanking the Italian on Twitter

James Rodriguez has led the tributes to Carlo Ancelotti after the coach was sacked by Real Madrid on Monday.

The Italian won the Champions League and Copa del Rey last season but failed to land a major trophy this season, which has resulted in him being relieved of his duties.

Madrid president Florentino Perez held a brief press conference to announce the news and said a new manager would be in place by next week, with Napoli's Rafa Benitez the current favourite.

The decision has been met with disappointment by several members of Madrid's squad, who have taken to Twitter to thank Ancelotti for his guidance over the past two seasons.

James tweeted a message in Spanish which read: "Thank you for everything boss, I soon learned a lot from you."

The Colombian's team-mate Marcelo added: "Thank you for everything boss. You are a great coach. Farewell!"

Toni Kroos, who joined the club last summer from Bayern Munich, wished his old boss success with all of his coming endeavours.
