Apologetic Toto Wolff backs Lewis Hamilton to recover quickly from Monaco setback

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff believes Lewis Hamilton will not dwell on the result of Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix.

Hamilton led the race up until lap 66 when Mercedes "got the math wrong" and called him in for a pit stop under a safety car believing he would retain his lead. However, Hamilton emerged from the pit stop in third and was unable to find a way back past Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg in front of him, effectively handing the top two places to his two biggest title rivals.

The result sees Rosberg close to within 10 points of Hamilton, but Wolff does not think it will throw the reigning champion off his stride.

"He has such a mental strength and he is on a roll," Wolff said. "It must be very sore to lose this one because it was his to win, but I have no doubt that he will recover as quickly as he always did."

Asked how the team could make it up to Hamilton, Wolff said: "I went to see him in the TV scrum and we win and we lose again. That one was on the team and I apologised and that's probably the only thing you can do. He is a great leader and a great driver and I am sure that he will understand that sometimes we make errors and this was such a situation."

Wolff emphasised that no-one was happy with the way the Monaco Grand Prix unfolded, including the overall Daimler and Mercedes boss Dieter Zetsche.

"Dr Zetsche was very unhappy with that particular situation. We have a championship leader, which is Lewis, and we had Nico running in No.2 today on the track, and believe me there is no such thing as favouritism in this team for whatever reason."
