Mercedes wary of Ferrari threat

Mercedes Motorsport boss Toto Wolf has warned his side to remain very wary of the threat posed by Ferrari after Sebastian Vettel took a substantial chunk out of Lewis Hamilton's championship lead in the Hungarian Grand Prix.

In  an interview with Wolff he admitted that Ferrari's form has prevented his team relaxing and thinking the championship was all but won.

“Malaysia was certainly a little bit of a wake-up call,” explained Wolff.

“After Melbourne we felt we had the situation under control and we were caught out for various reasons. And in hindsight, maybe such a little slap is good sometimes for the organisation.”

“We have definitely benefited because we have probably set new, more aggressive targets in terms of development, lap time targets and quality expectations. We know that the threat is real.”

Though Wolff remains certain the trials and tribulations of an error-strewn Hungarian Grand Prix won't necessarily be repeated, it is a reminder of the challenge Mercedes faces when it is under pressure.

“You just need to be careful,” he said.

“We're just 42 points ahead in the Drivers' World Championship and you can see how quickly it goes. You have a bad day, two cars not scoring good points and 'boom' you go backwards. But that is a mentality we're having anyway of always being a bit sceptical about how we are doing."
