World champion Carl Froch retires from boxing

Boxing hero Carl Froch calls it a day
More than a year after he knocked out George Groves in front of 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium, Carl Froch has called it a career.

The 38-year-old who started boxing at the age of nine in Nottingham's Phoenix amateur gym and has won four world championships has cited the lack of desire to fight as the reason for his retirement.

"Mentally, it's not there anymore. The desire has gone.

"The fighting machine has gone and it is not coming back."

"I said after I beat George Groves for a second time at Wembley over a year back that I might not box again and that I'd have to wait and see how things panned out.

"It's been too long since that fight, I feel I have put the fighting machine away for too long. I couldn't get hold of it and fight one more time.

"Physically I could do it but mentally I can't. Boxing is the last thing on my mind when my head hits the pillow at night but when the alarm goes off at six, I'm wondering if I should be out running.

"There is no better feeling than standing in the middle of a big arena victorious and I know I am never going to get that feeling ever again.

"That is what I am turning my back on. There comes a time in your career when you have to say enough is enough. You have to be honest with yourself."

After winning the bronze medal at the 2001 World Amateur Championships, Froch turned professional and has since lost only two of his 35 fights.

Froch will now be joining Adam Smith, Johnny Nelson and other expert analysts as part of Sky Sports' boxing coverage.
