In a contest, especially in a championship, it is imminent
that one emerges as a winner and the other one exits as a loser. And, the recently
concluded men's French Open Final is not an exception.
A seemingly repeat of his previous chances to become the eight
men to win at least once in all majors, Novak Djokovic once again came up short
in his bid to grab a title in Paris. He was in the same position in 2012 and
2014, when he lost to the nine-time French Open champ Rafael Nadal. However, in
the 2015 edition he easily trampled Nadal in the quarterfinals, but was hindered
by a different opponent in the form of Stan Wawrinka.
When the world's number one received his silver plate for the
third time in the same court, the crowd gave him an unusually long ovation.
Djokovic, who had tears in his eyes simply shook his head and said, "Not easy
to stand there as a runner-up again, but I lost to a better player who played
some courageous tennis."
Currently, the Serbian has won a total of eight Grand Slam
titles, five at the Australian Open, two at the Wimbledon, and one at the US Open. His thirst for a major clay title intensifies as his bid continues.
"Maybe in some important moments, I didn't feel I had
that explosivity in the legs, but, look, at the end of the day, (Wawrinka) was
just a better player," the 28-year old said.
Stan Wawrinka who played an incredible tennis proved that he’s
definitely more than just a compatriot of Roger Federer. He has finally moved
on from the shadow of his Swiss teammate with his recent achievements.
Wawrinka won the Australian Open last year by beating the then
1st seed Rafael Nadal, being the first player in 21 years to beat
the top two seeds en route to a Grand Slam title. What’s more, he duplicated
this feat in Paris this year by beating Federer in the quarterfinals before
trampling Djokovic.
His beautiful backhand and sixty winners are the
main reasons why he was able to outdo his opponent. It was more than enough to
break Novak's 28-match winning streak when another backhand from him earned the
match's last break, to 5-4 in fourth set.
"Certainly one of the best matches of my
career," the new champion said, "if not the best."
"I know he's looking
for that title," Wawrinka said. "I hope he will get one, one day,
because he deserves one."
