Timothy Bradley wins WBO belt in a controversial finish

Timothy Bradley wins WBO belt
In what was dubbed as one of the strangest endings ever, Timothy Bradley won against Jessie Vargas.

The match between the two boxers ended controversially. Bradley with a (32-1-1) record controlled most of his bout over the previously unbeaten Vargas. However, in the final round things suddenly changed. Vargas was able to land a vicious overhand right to Bradley which made the latter stumble and hurt. Then the 'strange' thing happened.

With 10 seconds to spare in the match, referee Pat Russell walked in between the fighters and waved his arms to signal that Vargas has won by a knockout.

Or so everyone thought.

Vargas' corner has already started celebrating when Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti went to Russell and asked what had happened.

It turned out that the referee had mistakenly thought that the 10-second warning was the bell to end the fight.

The officials had to look at the scorecards for the decision which unanimously favored Bradley, 117-111, 116-112 and 115-112.

Vargas complained that if the last round wasn't stopped, he could have finished Bradley and won. This was instantly denied by the new WBO welterweight titlist who insisted that he could have still made it in those last seconds.

The disputed fight is Bradley's comeback after a winless 2014.
