To open their Copa America campaign, tournament host Chile trampled Ecuador 2-0. It was a good start for La Roja who are bidding for their first title against South American giants like Brazil and Argentina.
Goals from Napoli winger Eduardo Vargas and Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal have lift Chile’s cup hopes.
Chile had early chances in the form of Alexis Sanchez, who almost found an opener twice. Sanchez’s first just got wide while his second attempt was perfectly cleared out by Alexander Dominguez.
On the other side, Ecuador almost scored before the halftime mark, but Chilean team captain Claudio Bravo completed a fine save.
Once again Arsenal’s Sanchez had an opening, but just fired wide. Ecuador also threatened when Jefferson Montero found Enner Valencia, but was a few inches wide.
A great opportunity came to Chile when Vidal broke into the box and got pulled down by Bolano, forcing the referee to give out a penalty. The 28-year old capitalized from the 12 yards to give his country their first goal in the 67th minute.
Moments later, Sanchez picked a perfect pass to set up Vargas, who gave his best and fired past Dominguez making it 2-0. Chile’s Matias Fernandez got his second yellow in stoppage time, but that didn’t stop his squad from celebrating at the end of the final buzzer.
