After making history and completing the elusive treble in
their 3-1 victory over Juventus, Barcelona’s coach Luis Enrique refused to
divulge if he will stay with the club. He previously stated that his position
is still uncertain even with a year left on his current contract.
In his debut, Tata Martino’s successor has led Barca into
winning the La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Champions League. He has imitated
Pep Guardiola’s achievement six years ago, nabbing the second treble for the
club and making them the only team who have won the European treble twice. Recent
victories had proved the rumors regarding his reported fallout with Barca's
talisman Lionel Messi wrong.
The doubts and uncertainties regarding Enrique’s tenure were
cleared when Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu officially announced
that the Spaniard has committed to continue in his role with the team. Bartomeu
was able to persuade the former footballer before stepping down as the Blaugrana’s
president.
He has also confirmed his candidacy for the presidential election to
take place late in July, which he was pressed to call to try and lift the
negativity surrounding the club.
"I want to announce that this afternoon, a few minutes
ago, we have agreed to renew Luis Enrique's contract until 2017," Bartomeu
said. "We have Luis Enrique for two more years."
"I present my resignation to step aside for the
elections," the 40th Barcelona president added. "In these
elections, the club must choose a model for the club, a way to act and think. I
will defend my model because I believe we have done well, because I believe
Barca can continue to grow and win and keep being a leader in world football.
"I hope we are up to the task, and that the campaign is
a model one marked by civic values."
